Our new favourite fencing shoe: the Rophoo “Paratrooper”.
From a new manufacturer specialising only in fencing shoes, co-founded by an engineering veteran who spent 20 years working for Adidas.
The Rophoo Paratroopers are based on the classic aesthetic of the legendary Adidas “D’Artagnan IV” fencing shoes, with upgrades to the outer sole for durability and to the inner sole for comfort. They have similar grip and performance to the other legendary fencing shoe, the Nike “AirZoom” (formerly “Ballestra”), a wider fit for those of you with big feet, and noticeably better durability on metal pistes — especially if you’re a foot scraper.
Why these shoes are called Paratrooper we have no idea. They’re not the lightest shoes on the market, but they may well give the most bounce after landing an aerial manoeuvre like a fleche or a jump-parry.
Okay, maybe that’s where the name comes from.
Highly recommended by the instructors at Sydney Sabre. Not only because these shoes are the fencing equivalent of rally-car tires, but because they come in black and red.
