These pages describe our classes and lessons for adults and children.

Click here to book classes and available lesson slots. Bookings will be confirmed on receipt of payment. Classes and lessons can be paid for here.

Please note:

  • All Courses are 10 weeks, one class per week, run within each NSW school term.
  • Each Course must be booked and paid for in advance, so our instructors can plan.
  • For adult courses, the grading exam for each Level runs on the Sunday at the end of the Course. This is included in the Course fee.
  • For kids courses, there is no grading exam; kids are promoted to the next Grade on seniority (years experience) or age, whichever comes first.
  • We run ad-hoc fun competitions, with prizes, throughout the year. These are not included in the Course fee; we charge the Guest fee instead.
  • If you miss a class, email us to join the next class of that Level in that week. Or skip. Or book a private lesson to catch up.
  • If you must cancel your lesson, please contact us at least 24 hours before your lesson slot so we can give it to the next person on our waitlist. We will regretfully charge you the fee if you do not.

Please email if you have questions, want to book, or would like to request a class or lesson slot for us to run in the next term.

You can send us money here, direct debit preferred, but we can take most forms of remittance from American Express to cash-by-carrier-pigeon.

Intro Session

First time? This session is for you. Group introductory session for 90 minutes to take you from never having held a sabre before to fencing matches in full electric gear.

Courses

See here and for more details.

The short version: As far as we know, we run the only dedicated Adult training course for sabre in the world. As in, people who take up sabre as adults, not adults who learned as kids.

This is that Course.

It is divided into Levels 1-5. Each takes 10 weeks to complete. By the end you’ll know everything you need to walk into any club in the world and fence sabre. We will also offer you the opportunity to sign the Black Book, become a Member, and have the keys to the Centre.

If you are currently enrolled in a Course for the term, we welcome you to also come in for additional supervised practice whenever we are open. We will charge you the Guest fee and waive gear hire.

Members

Literal keys to the Centre. Unlimited access to Sydney Sabre Centre 24/7.

Members must have all their own gear.

How do you know if you are eligible for membership?

If you have signed the Black Book, have a Level 5 label, or a Sydney Sabre red trefoil patch, you are a graduate and can be a member.

Welcome back. We missed you.

There’s a minimum initial 1-year commitment. After the first year you can cancel at any time. We don’t pause subscriptions.

Members can use Sydney Sabre 24/7, allowing for classes and lessons. This does not include access to Lockers or Hire Gear.

Private lessons with John

John gives a very limited number of private lessons each week. His schedule is fickle because of his alter ego life. He also employs deeply unorthodox methods. Sometimes he talks with a strange accent, like he’s channeling the spirit of some long-gone beloved maestro.

If you still want lessons with John after knowing all this please contact us. We will do our best to accommodate you. John loves teaching. He’s just over-optimistic about his schedule.

Private lessons with Instructor

The excellent and professional instructors who teach the Adult Course and Kids Classes are also available for private lessons by appointment. Please contact us and we will find a mutually convenient time.

Guests

One does not simply ‘drop in’ to Sydney Sabre.

But we do welcome Guests. There are two types:

  • Students currently enrolled in a Course, or receiving regular lessons, wanting additional training in a different session.
  • Sabre fencers who are guests of an attending Member or Instructor.

You are welcome to Sydney Sabre whenever we are open or your attending Member or Instructor is present. They will charge you the Guest Fee, and if you’re not a currently-enrolled Student and you use our gear, the Gear Hire fee. Guests are the responsibility of their attending Member.

Gear Hire

This is for Guests needing gear. It doesn’t apply to Students currently enrolled in Courses or Lessons: gear is included for intro sessions, classes, and lessons.

Members and Guests must have all their own gear. We sell gear in our store in Sydney.

Holiday Camps

We run camps for kids aged 10-16 every school holidays. Sessions run from 9 am – 5 pm. Please contact us for details.

Parties and Group Events

We run customised group events for 6-16 people. We’ve done everything from birthday parties, to bucks and hens nights, to masterclasses for movie extras, to women’s-only outings, and corporate offsite team-building exercises.

We can create a package for you if you’re looking for something specific. Come talk to us!
